Frequently Asked

Common questions about our terrariums and how to care for them.

About Terrariums

What is a terrarium?

A terrarium is a miniature ecosystem built inside a glass vessel. Plants, moss, and substrate layers work together in a contained environment, creating a tiny living world that largely manages itself.

What is the difference between a closed and an open terrarium?

A closed terrarium is sealed, creating its own water cycle — moisture circulates between soil, plants, and glass. An open terrarium has no lid and requires regular misting and closer attention to soil moisture. We make both types.

How long do terrariums last?

With the right conditions, a well-built closed terrarium can persist for years. Each of ours is acclimatised in our studio and released only once it has proven itself stable, giving it a strong foundation for the long term.

What are the little white bugs in my terrarium?

Those are springtails — tiny six-legged creatures that are beneficial to the ecosystem. They eat dead matter and reduce bacteria. Leave them be; they are doing good work.

Care & Placement

Most answers live in our Care Guide.

Do I need to water my closed terrarium?

Your terrarium has self-sustaining potential — the sealed water cycle means it manages its own moisture day-to-day. Occasional top-ups are needed as the reservoir gradually depletes over weeks to months. See our Care Guide for full details.

When should I water it?

When the water level in the bottom pebbles drops below about one-third to one-half coverage. Use a slow pour via pipette. If you are unsure about water type, contact us.

Where should I place my terrarium?

In bright, indirect light for 8–12 hours daily. North or east-facing windows within one metre are ideal. South or west-facing windows work at 1–2 metres distance. A full-spectrum grow light at 30–40cm is another option. Avoid direct sunlight.

Can I open my closed terrarium?

The lid stays on unless you are troubleshooting. Opening it disrupts the sealed water cycle. If the glass is misty all day, you can vent for 2–4 hours to rebalance. See our Care Guide for detailed troubleshooting.
